Ely Farm site

• Two beautiful acres of farmland by the river Ely at the city end of Caerau, Cardiff.

• surrounded by woodland, allotments and a dead-end quiet road.

It feels like a little bit of the country in the city!!

This feasibility phase will be complete by Setp 2012 with a decision of what to build.

• Facilitation for the group from an expert in Cooperative housing
• Training for the group… to make sure we operate effectively as a group

It also means that the Welsh Government will help make the project happen….

Governments in England and Wales are taking this seriously.

The Welsh Government is currently interested in coops and alternative forms of housing tenure,

-  they will be supporting several pilot schemes in Wales.

Cadwyn with Cohousing Cymru are interested in the possibility of  our project becoming one of these pilots.

We are delight to be invited to a meeting in March 2012 with Cadwyn and the Welsh Government to discuss this further.

Louise and Sarah explained that currently we are looking for full members who could be interested in owning a home in the Cohousing development. We will be developing 20-35 homes, the majority to buy, but some will be owned by the Housing Association and rented to those who cannot afford to buy.

If you are interested, but do not currently own a house and are not in a position to buy, then we would love to hear from you.

The Housing Association will only rent to those on the Housing Waiting list.

• So apply to Cardiff’s Housing Waiting list
• Write in big letters on the application – I AM INTERESTED IN COHOUSING – there will be no box for this information, but write it anyway.

One of the criteria for selecting tenants will be that everyone must be interested and committed to Cohousing values, whether buying or renting.

In December we all met with Hanover Housing Association, who are working with 5 cohousing groups in England, to find out more about what is involved in taking the project forward.

Cadwyn would be purchasing the land and building the houses including the Co-house. They are currently deciding whether they are able to take the project forward with us and will be giving us their decision Feb-Mar 2012.

The Welsh Government is interested in exploring Co-operative and Mutual Housing alternative models in Wales and will be establishing several pilot projects.

Cadwyn intend to submit a proposal -  to develop a cohousing project with us -  to the Welsh Government to be one of these pilot projects.

A meeting to discuss this further is planned for Mar 2012.

This is looking very hopeful as more support will help Cadwyn and us move this innovative project forward.
